In 1921, the Banca Italiana di Sconto, which backed the Ing. Nicola Romeo & Co, went broke and the national government needed to support the commercial companies involved, among that was Alfa Romeo, through the "Consorzio per Sovvenzioni sui Valori Industriali". In 1925, the railway activities were segregated from the Romeo company, and in 1928, Nicola Romeo still left. In 1933, the state ownership was reorganized under the banner of the Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale (IRI) by Benito Mussolini's authorities, which in turn experienced effective control. The business struggled to come back to profitability after the Second World War, and considered mass-producing small vehicles than hand-building luxury models rather. In 1954, the Alfa was developed because of it Romeo Twin Cam engine, which would stay in production until 1994. The company's name is a combo of the initial name, A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) and the previous name of businessman Nicola Romeo, who got control of the business in 1915.Foundation and early yearsA 1908 Darracq 8/10 HP built by Alfa Romeo's predecessor, Darracq ItalianaThe A.L.F.A 24 hp (this has been Castagna torpedo body) was the first car made by Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (A.L.F.A) in 1910.The ongoing company that became Alfa Romeo was founded as Societ? Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) in 1906 by the French automobile firm of Alexandre Darracq, with some Italian investors. One of them, Cavaliere Ugo Stella, an aristocrat from Milan, became chairman of the SAID in 1909.[6] The firm's preliminary location was in Naples, but even before the engineering of the planned stock experienced started, Darracq decided late in 1906 that Milan would become more suitable and accordingly a tract of land was acquired in the Milan suburb of Portello, where a new stock of 6,700 square metres (8,000 sq yd) was erected. 1909 late, the Italian Darracq automobiles were advertising and Stella gradually, with the other Italian co-investors, founded a new company known as A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), in the beginning still in partnership with Darracq. The first non-Darracq car made by the company was the 1910 24 HP, created by Giuseppe Merosi, hired in 1909 for designing new cars more suited to the Italian market. Merosi would go on to design a series of new A.L.F.A. cars, with more powerful engines (40-60 Horsepower). A.L.F.A. ventured into motor unit racing, with drivers Franchini and Ronzoni contending in the 1911 Targa Florio with two 24-hp models. In 1914, an advanced Grand Prix car was designed and built, the GP1914, with a four-cylinder engine, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and twin ignition.[7] However, the onset of the First World Conflict halted automobile development at A.L.F.A. for 3 years. In August 1915, the company came up under the direction of Neapolitan businessperson Nicola Romeo, who modified the manufacturer to create armed service hardware for the Italian and Allied war work. Munitions, aircraft engines and other components, compressors, and generators based on the company's existing car engines were produced in a vastly enlarged factory through the war. After the war, Romeo spent his war profits in acquiring locomotive and railway carriage crops in Saronno (Costruzioni Meccaniche di Saronno), Rome (Officine Meccaniche di Roma), and Naples (Officine Ferroviarie Meridionali), which were added to his A.L.F.A. possession.Car production was not considered initially, but resumed in 1919 since parts for the conclusion of 105 autos had continued to be at the A.L.F.A. manufacturer since 1915.[6] In 1920, the name of the business was altered to Alfa Romeo with the Torpedo 20-30 HP the first car to be so badged.[9] Their first success came in 1920 when Giuseppe Campari won at Mugello and prolonged with second devote the Targa Florio influenced by Enzo Ferrari. Giuseppe Merosi persisted as head developer, and the company continued to produce solid road cars as well as successful race cars (including the 40-60 Horsepower and the RL Targa Florio)In 1923 Vittorio Jano was lured from Fiat, partly thanks to the persuasion of a young Alfa racing driver named Enzo Ferrari, to replace Merosi as key designer at Alfa Romeo. The first Alfa Romeo under Jano was the P2 Grand Prix car, which earned Alfa Romeo the inaugural world tournament for Grand Prix vehicles in 1925. For road autos Jano developed a series of small-to-medium-displacement 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder inline motors based on the P2 device that set up the architecture of the business's machines, with light alloy construction, hemispherical combustion chambers, centrally located plugs, two rows of overhead valves per cylinder loan company and dual over head cams. Jano's designs demonstrated both reliable and powerful.Enzo Ferrari demonstrated a much better team manager than driver, and when the factory team was privatised, it became Scuderia Ferrari. When Ferrari left Alfa Romeo, he continued to create his own autos. Tazio Nuvolari drove for Alfa often, winning many races prior to the Second World Battle. In 1928 Nicola Romeo still left, and in 1933 Alfa Romeo was rescued by the federal government, which possessed effective control then. Alfa Romeo became a musical instrument of Mussolini's Italy, a national emblem. During this period it built bespoke vehicles for the rich, with systems normally by Touring of Milan or Pinin Farina. This era peaked with the Alfa Romeo 2900B Type 35 racers. The Alfa factory (turned during wartime to the production of Macchi C.202 Folgore engines: the Daimler-Benz 600 series built under license) was bombed through the Second World Conflict, and battled to come back to success after the battle. The blissful luxury vehicles were out. Smaller, mass-produced vehicles started to be produced beginning with the 1954 model year, with the benefits of the Giulietta series of berline (saloons/sedans), coupes and open two-seaters. All three kinds shared what would become the Alfa Romeo overhead Twin Cam four-cylinder engine motor, 1300 cc initially. This engine would eventually be enlarged to 2000 cc and would remain in production until 1995.
